This seminar was originally held in 2017 at Sigmund Freud University in Ljubljana as part of an educational program related to analytical psychology and psychotherapy. The material is presented here in a minimally edited form in order to preserve the original seminar structure, rhythm of thought and discussion-oriented character of the lectures.
The seminar follows Jung’s essay The Psychology of Transference and approaches its central ideas through the symbolic imagery of the Rosarium Philosophorum. Particular emphasis is placed on transference, projection, archetypal dynamics and the process of individuation within analytical psychology.
Since Jung’s essay is often experienced as conceptually and symbolically difficult, the seminar attempts to connect its alchemical symbolism with clinical material, psychological experience and the dynamics that emerge between analyst and patient during psychotherapy and analysis.
The seminar may be most productively approached alongside Jung’s original essay, moving gradually between the primary text and the seminar commentary itself. Parts 2 through 8 broadly follow the structure and sequence of Jung’s essay, and the commentaries were originally developed in parallel with a close reading of the text itself.
Since the material originated in a live seminar setting, the written version inevitably lacks many of the discussions between participants and lecturer, together with numerous spontaneous associations and clinical examples that emerged during the seminar itself. In practice, these exchanges often contributed substantially to the psychological depth and experiential understanding of the material. Nevertheless, even in this more reduced form, the seminar may still convey something of the dynamics of transference as they appear in analytical practice.
The material presented here has been divided into eight parts, with links to the individual sections provided below.
Additional seminar parts will be added gradually.
